Ounaskoski Camping – A Cultural and Historical Gem by the Kemijoki River
Preserving Ounaskoski Camping in its current location is not only a culturally and historically significant act but also a forward-looking investment in the community-oriented and sustainable development of Rovaniemi.
A long-standing history of the area
Ounaskoski Camping has a long and significant history in Rovaniemi tourism. The campsite is centrally located on the eastern bank of the Kemijoki River, just a short distance from the city center. Development of the area into a campsite began in the 1980s, and since then, the Puljula family has been responsible for its operations. In 1989, Rovaniemen Matkailupalvelu Oy was established as the official company behind Ounaskoski Camping.
Aiming for year-round service
Ounaskoski Camping aims to further develop its operations, with the goal of enabling year-round use of the area. This development reflects the campsite’s commitment to providing high-quality services and maintaining its position and location as an important part of Rovaniemi’s tourism offering.

Future and Year-Round Activities
We are developing Ounaskoski Camping with a hybrid model, where the area serves as a shared space for both tourists and local residents. The goal is to create a year-round meeting place that hosts cultural events, workshops, and community gatherings. This approach strengthens Rovaniemi’s identity as a vibrant and inclusive city.
We want to invite the people of Rovaniemi to participate in the development and planning of the area. Through co-creation, we ensure that the campsite meets the needs and wishes of the locals. This inclusive process increases the area’s acceptance and engages residents in its future.
We greatly value local perspectives and ideas for developing the area. You can share your thoughts and suggestions through our website or by sending an email to ounaskoski-camping@windowslive.com. Together, we can build Ounaskoski into a place that reflects the spirit of Rovaniemi and offers experiences for everyone.

Collaboration and Community
Since 1989, we have employed local youth, offering them valuable job opportunities and experiences. We actively cooperate with local businesses and participate in community events, such as sponsoring the Wanhat Markkinat festival. Additionally, we support the upcoming Prodigy Disc Pro Tour 2025 frisbee golf competition, held at the Napapiiri Disc Golf Park in Rovaniemi from May 30 to June 1, 2025.
We collaborate with Rovaniemi-based Restaurant Valdemari, which offers our guests a chance to enjoy local flavors and atmosphere. Our partnership aims to enrich our customers’ Lapland experience by providing diverse services and memorable moments.
We are open to new collaboration opportunities for the winter season. We are seeking local companies and actors interested in jointly developing Ounaskoski Camping into a year-round destination offering experiences for both locals and tourists. If you are interested in cooperation, please contact us.

Cultural Heritage and History: Reviving the Log Driving Culture
The Ounaskoski area has a rich history as a center of log driving culture. The last log driving competitions were held here in 1960, after which the Valajaskoski power plant reservoir reduced summer currents and the competitions ended. This heritage offers an opportunity to revive the area’s history and provide tourists with authentic experiences.

Sustainable Development and Year-Round Use
Our goal is to develop Ounaskoski Camping into a year-round destination that supports sustainable tourism and the local economy. Maintaining the area in its current location enables its development into a diverse and ecologically sustainable travel destination.
